‘Worrisome’ Mutations Spark New Fears After Teen’s Miraculous Recovery
A teenager has fully recovered from a severe H5N1 bird flu infection, but researchers have discovered concerning mutations in the virus that could make it more infectious and dangerous.
United States: The teenage girl who contracted H5N1 bird flu from Canada at the start of November and whose life was in danger was placed in the ICU. This health condition has at last been brought into the public domain.

However, the sequencing of the virus that invaded her body immediately showed that the virus had undergone changes, which researchers said could increase the virus’s ability to invade human cells and cause illness – a fact described as worrying by the study authors.
The case was described in the Forum section of the New England Journal of Medicine published on Tuesday on H5N1 cases in 2024 in North America.
On the other hand, public health officials from across the United States, CDC, and state and local health departments described 46 human cases that were reported from March to October, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Cases of bird flu
Out of these, there have been only 66 confirmed human infective H5N1 bird flu cases in the US in 2024 together.

In the case of the 13-year-old Canadian child, the girl arrived at a local ER on November 4 exhibiting conjunctivitis of the right eye for 2 days and the left eye for 1 day, as well as fever.
This child had a history of asthma, which, together with having an elevated body-mass index and being classified as class 2 obesity, the child was discharged that day with no treatment.
Deterioration of condition
Over the next three days, they developed a cough and diarrhea and had episodes of vomiting, the Los Angeles Times reported.
She was again admitted to the ER on the 7th of November in oxygen failure, and this was characterized by hemodynamic imbalances that brightly suggest poor blood circulation in the body.
